We arrived at the new eruption just a few hours after the lava first reached the surface yesterday afternoon. New land exploding out of the hillside, transforming the landscape around it. I always feel the need to say goodbye to the moss and ground that will soon be covered by lava, but then I realise it’s all from the same origin and has happened hundreds if not thousands of times here in the past, just on a different and incomprehensible timescale compared to ours. Seeing nature’s process unfold in a way that is completely unrelated to human action, and connecting my eyes to the magma that swirls beneath us every day, is by far the most transformative experience I’ve ever had. It continues to transform my vision of the planet with every sighting. #iceland #volcano #eruption
